The Law Relating to Child Support

Introduction

  1. This electronic version of the loose-leaf work, entitled "The Law Relating to Child Support", sets out the current provisions relating to child support.
  2. The text of the work represents, broadly speaking, only those provisions which were in force when the latest published supplement went to press, or were due to come into force shortly afterwards; provisions and amendments which have been repealed or revoked or otherwise superseded will not normally be reproduced. Likewise, provisions which simply amend existing provisions without special savings will not normally be reproduced; the existing text, if within the purview of this volume, will itself be reproduced in its amended form together with an annotation. Those who wish to be able to refer to superseded provisions may wish to retain, and index, the pages discarded at each supplement.
  3. The deletion or omission of provisions is generally explained in footnotes or crossnotes or, if indicated in the Child Support Act by a row of dots, in the list of omissions at Annex 1 to that Act. Annex 2 to that Act deals with its commencement.
  4. Provisions not yet commenced are printed in italic sanserif type, to distinguish them from currently-operating provisions which are printed in normal Roman type.
  5. Superseded provisions which are transitionally or permanently saved (e.g. for particular purposes, particular people or particular situations) will normally be retained in the text together with an explanatory annotation if the savings are substantial. Where however the savings are of a common form or obvious nature, or of limited application or of minor importance, the saved provisions are not normally retained in the text, though the fact that there are savings will normally be mentioned in the annotation. Where both the up-to-date version and a transitionally saved earlier version of the same provision are reproduced, the latter will be in small sanserif type.
  6. Provisions which have been repealed or revoked but which are needed in order to understand other provisions which remain in force will be reproduced in small Roman type, suitably annotated.
  7. Footnotes in Statutory Instruments are normally reproduced but are occasionally omitted or abridged to avoid duplication with other footnotes or with margin notes.
  8. In the Contents section of this volume, Statutory Instruments are listed twice: first in alphabetical order of key words in their title (printed in bold print) indicating their general subject matter; and secondly in chronological order of their making. In the alphabetical list, instruments which have the same bold key words as each other are listed in chronological order.
  9. After the Contents section, there come the Acts, and then the Statutory Instruments. After that there are:
    • a check-page showing the number of the supplement (or initial issue) with which the current version of each leaf was issued; and
    • a leaf on which the reader can record when he has incorporated each Supplement (the "Record of Amendments" page); this is placed at the very end of the volume.
  10. Pages which do not reproduce provisions of the Act or Statutory Instrument described in their page-heading are printed with black-striped edges. These include lists of contents and abbreviations, and annexes to Acts and Statutory Instruments.
  11. The primary legislation in this work is edited in a form similar to that adopted by the Editorial Board of "Statutes in Force", as explained in the Guide to that publication.
  12. This work does not purport to be authority for any legislative provision. It seeks to avoid anything which might be construed as a comment on, or interpretation of, a statute or other instrument. Thus material which appears to be misprinted or mispunctuated may be an exact and deliberate reproduction of material published by authority. While every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of this work, the ACI Publications team would be happy to hear from anyone who spots errors.
