Andrew Smith, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, has announced the re-appointment of Sally Smedley and Lisa Stone as Non-Executive Directors of Remploy for three years with effect from 4th January 2004.
Andrew Smith said,
“I am pleased to announce Lisa Stone and Sally Smedley have been re-appointed for a second term. They have made a valuable contribution to Remploy during their first three years on the Remploy Board and their appointments for a second term recognise that contribution”.
Remploy is Britain’s largest employer of disabled people and provider of the Government’s WORKSTEP programme.
Notes for editors
- Remploy is an Executive Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB), sponsored by the Department for Work and Pensions through Jobcentre Plus. It is also a company limited by guarantee and a Public Corporation. It receives a base grant-in-aid each year in exchange for delivering a range of employment and development opportunities through the Government’s WORKSTEP programme. Remploy currently supports around 9,000 disabled people in their factory sites and through their Interwork placement service. In 2002-2003 Remploy progressed 1,610 disabled people into unsupported employment.
- Remploy is the largest single provider of the WORKSTEP programme and is separately contracted to deliver other Jobcentre Plus programmes, including New Deal for Disabled People (NDDP), Work Preparation and Work Based Learning for Adults (WBLA). These contracts are paid for and organised separately from the grant-in-aid given to Remploy for delivery of the WORKSTEP Programme.
- As Remploy is an NDPB, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions is responsible for appointing Non-Executives to the Remploy Board. There are currently seven Non-Executive members (including one Chairman) including Sally Smedley and Lisa Stone.
- As Public Appointments, these Non-Executive posts are governed by guidelines set out by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments (OCPA). Under these guidelines appointments are made for three years and can be extended to a maximum of ten years subject to review. Sally Smedley and Lisa Stone have both been appointed for a second three-year term.
- Remuneration received for these posts is £7,500 per annum.
- Sally Smedley is the Director of Human Resources & Communication at British Energy plc and Lisa Stone is the Chief Operating Officer of Hg Capital.
