Pensions Reform

Security in retirement

On 25 May 2006 the Government published its response to the UK's long-term pensions challenge. Our White Paper 'Security in retirement: towards a new pensions system' aims to encourage more people to plan and save for their retirement.

The proposed reforms will provide the infrastructure for the system for the next forty years. They also lay the foundation for a new and lasting consensus on pensions.

Between May and September 2006, the Government consulted on the reform package in the White Paper. Around 350 individuals and organisations responded to the consultation. The Government published a summary of the responses and its proposals for moving forward on 30th October 2006.

In November 2006 the Government published the Pensions Bill. This document legislates for long-term pensions reform, making the state pension fairer and more generous and providing a solid foundation for private saving.
